-- ROMedit Tutorial: Tiles --

NOTE: the FF1CHAR.TLE tileset file is required for this tutorial.

This tutorial will give you a quick runthru of the ROMEDIT Tile Editing utilities.

First, run ROMedit. Hit 2 to run the Tile Editor (TILEEDIT.EXE). Tile Editor will start and you will be presented with the main tile editing screen. If you want, press H now to read the help screen.

We will start by opening a pre-made tile data file. Press L to bring up the file selection screen. Go to the directory where you installed ROMedit, move the cursor to FF1CHAR.TLE and hit enter.

The screen will flash, and the tile data will be loaded. Now, press T to bring up the tile selection box. Type in 213 and hit enter.

The screen will change to tile 213, the hammer/mallet tile. Move the cursor to the handle and press C to bring up the color selection box. Type 6 and hit enter. The border of the cursor will change to brown, as will the box to the right listed under CLR. You will also notice that the number under CLR changes to 006.

Now, move the cursor to the dark gray part right above the brown on the handle. Hit enter to change some of the gray pixels to brown pixels. As you change the pixel colors, notice how the tile below the edit screen changes. This is what the finished tile will look like. Now, change to a different color by using the [ and ] keys. Play around with the tiles for a bit. ( and ) will change the selected tile, in case you want to play with some others.

When you are done, press X to quit. Tile Editor will ask you if you want to save the data. Hit N for no, since we want to keep the old file.

(Alternatively, you could hit Y for yes, then when it asks whether to save to a new or old file, you could hit O and save the file to a different name.)

After you quit Tile Editor, you will be returned to the ROMedit Selection screen. Hit 3 to choose "Tile swapper".

The Tile Swapper utility will now start. As soon as it runs, it will ask you whether to load a file or quit. Hit a key to continue, and the file selection box will come up. Go to the directory where you installed ROMedit, move the cursor to FF1CHAR.TLE and hit enter.

Now you will be presented with the main tile swapping screen. If you want, press H now to view the help screen.

Now, we will play around with some of the tiles. Press F to bring up the first tile selection box. Type 138 and hit enter. The top tile will change to an A, and the number under FIRST will change to 138.

Now press S to bring up the second tile selection box. Type 138 and hit enter. Now the bottom tile will change to an A, and the number under SECOND will also change to 138.

Press ] once to change the lower tile to a B. Hit enter, and the two tiles will be swapped. Hit enter again to return them to their original positions.

WARNING: As soon as you swap tiles, the changes will be written to the file. Don't go around randomly rearranging the tiles, or you'll have a hard time reading any text in ROM Editor. ;)

Press X to quit Tile Swapper, and you will be returned to the ROMedit Selection screen. Now you may either move on to the ROM tutorial, or press X to quit ROMedit.
