Another Zelda II hack! I based this off of my Journey of a Day hack so it has all the features from that, plus some fine-tuning here and there. (mostly with the gfx.) Most things look even better or different now.

This is basically the original game, gameplay wise, but with a twist. Link can't jump. (at first) I wanted to do this to add a challenge to the original puzzles of Zelda II. Hopefully it will add a fresh feel to the game; A sense of challenge.

There are two difficulties. Easy and Hard. If you play Easy, all the enemies will do 1x damage to Link, but if you play Hard, they will do 2x damage.

I don't know what else to say! Play it and see for yourself! Hehe.

Last Update: 1-30-11
Version: 1.2
Download v1.2 Here

Edit: There is a version with jump enabled for those who don't like no jumping.

Title Screen! Back to the starry sky.

If only Link could jump. Hmm.

Try killing this without jumping! Ha!

YAY! Journey of a Day was awesome and I can't wait to give this one a whirl.

However, I am beginning to fear my own Z2 hack will never get done.

Well, I gave it a shot.

You have a distorted idea of "easy."
I loved Journey of a Day though (despite not finishing it), but it's harder for me to get into this one.

I'm not really diggin the jump ability being taken out. It's actually putting me off to the hack. The level 1 dungeon is where it originally is, but I can't even jump onto the first step. I'm assuming I will be able to jump if I level up or find some jump spell?

By the way, is this the same "Link's Nightmare" hack you posted a picture of in the other thread?

Update v1.2

I added a version with jump enabled. I should've done that from the start, hehe. At first this was just supposed to be the original Zelda II but with Journey of a Day gfx, but I got the no jump idea and changed things accordingly.

---

@bradzx, it is 257kb.

@Xeruss, I've played Zelda II so much that nothing about it is hard for me. So when I make these hacks I change things to make it more challenging for me. That's how I determine difficulty, but this time the only hard thing about it is the no jump handicap.

@RetroRain, it is the same hack. Also, you do need to get the jump spell to be able to go anywhere. That's the challenge! Hehe.

I don't think the original Zelda II is hard either, but what makes anything hard now is the repetitiveness. Patience is not my forte, especially when something needs either repeated killings or pixel jumping. I usually just end up using savestates...

But at least you tried something...

I've always wanted to mix Bionic Commando and Zelda II. So this was a thought from that. Unfortunately I am not capable of making a grappling hook, yet.

Edit: Btw, there isn't any pixel jumping in this.

Oh, so I don't know if this is possible or not, but RetroRain's misconception could make for a very entertaining hack.
If you could change one of the stats so that your jump increases in height every time you level, then design levels accordingly. Or maybe read from the number of crystals remaining... Anyway, just an interesting thought.

I really like that idea. It would work well with other spells, too. Like with the fairy spell I always thought it would be cool to make a time limit to which you are a fairy, then revert back to Link. Of course if this were implemented it would be a good if you could stay a fairy after screen transitions.

Don't get me wrong Ice Penguin, I think you are a very talented ROM hacker, and I do like what I see. I just didn't like the idea that you had to do extra work to get the jump ability.

Hey, I just beat the palace on the sea and this weird glitch happened.

An entire row on the overworld directly below the palace shifted to the left by several spaces.

EDIT: There's another glitch in New Kasuto. The game freezes when you enter the first house, and the old woman's house.

Question Ice Penguin. What does it means when every time you do a reset in the game?? I see that every time i finish a Palace and do a reset, my lives keep going down. you have to start the game all over game when all the lives are gone?

Those are your crystals, not your lives.

Beat this at last on easy

I really enjoyed it. It was nice not to have to completely rediscover everything for once, as things are roughly in the same places.

It took me ages to find the stupid kid to rescue though! I think the first time I checked the square I got a random encounter on it, so I missed it. I went all the way up to the final palace looking for that kid!

I never found the final magic container, I'm guessing it's in the desert town (fairy/thrust) where the lady won't let you in, but I could never find a way in.

The 6th palace was rather rage inducing not knowing your stats and stuff.

Thanks for another great hack, Doug!
