New game competition!

edited May 2017 in Announcements
Competition time!

There aren't any instructions at the moment, just some rules!

Rules...

1. Teams of 4 or less only. A team member can be a member of other teams.
2. You are allowed one professional programmer per team - use their knowledge wisely :)
3. WoS admins will determine whether a team member is professional or not, but as a starting point we will use anyone who has a game published in infoseek as a professional.
4. All entrants will have to PM a WoS admin with their address to we can send out prizes.
5. Team members must be announced here first otherwise the entry won't be judged.
6. Overall winners will be announced at S35 on 28th October 2017. Entrants that are there on the day will receive their prize on the day.
7. No commercial names or characters are to be used, however "inspired by" is ok.
8. The game can be in any category, however popular tools such as AGD will be categorised separately.
9. Any tools can be used.
10. All entries to be submitted by 14th October 2017
11. Entries should work on 128K ZX Spectrum and be able to load from tape as well as emulator.
12. WoS admins reserve the right to award spot prizes for non-winning entries in each category. These can range from exceptional graphics, music, etc to team work.

Categories are:-
Professional Tools (Quill, AGD, etc)
No tools (your own tools are ok as long as they were never published and therefore not in infoseek)
BASIC game
BASIC utility

We have had confirmation of the prizes and can confirm that all winning team members in each category will win a *very* limited edition WoS branded Vega+ each.

  • Two week judging period? You're brave, or don't expect a huge fallout (but then, I'm used to the craziness of Ludum Dare where there's thousands of entries..)

Anyway, I'm game. I have no idea whether I'll have time for anything, but I'll try. I'm afraid I'm a professional.

Oh cool! I can call myself as professional now! :) (I will quote this later.)

(Not committing to do anything yet.)

  • I may join in with this, provided I don't underestimate the work required for the project as I did in the last competition that I participated in.
Author of Spectrum games, among other things...
  • If I use my own game designer to build a game woud I just submit the game, or the whole suite of programs which I used to build the game as well?

If I were to submit my Gyron 2D game would I have to change the title to (eg.) Gyrefalcon 2D?
  • Should i change it to public tools?

Yes. Allowing some teams access to tools which the other teams haven't got and can't get wouldn't make for a level playing field.

Also, all games must be started from scratch. Someone offering his team a 90% finished game as a starting point wouldn't be fair either.

I wish I had the time to participate, this would be great fun. :(
  • That's me eliminated on both counts, then, and I hadn't even written one extra line of code.

OK, then, what if it might well have so happened that I'd already written the spec for another game but hadn't done any coding yet? Would that qualify as an entry?

That just sounds like trolling... I really don't see the point of having to "start from scratch" and write yet another sprite routine just because someone wants a level playing field... or a 128K loading routine, or reusing graphics I've drawn before.

For punishment, I'd say he should make a game from scratch, within 6 months time. :P :P :P

(I don't really care, to be honest; I'd probably make and release games whether there is a contest or not.)

  • I've decided to participate with this competition. I'll have to start from nothing, because my current Z80 routines aren't particularly fast or flexible. I've assembled a team of two people:

    Myself (John Connolly)
    and Jonathan Stringer

I will be taking over programming duties, and Jonathan has agreed to be program tester/design adviser.
Now onto planning the game itself! I've got a basic structure in my head, but it'll need to be fleshed out a bit.

There is no such thing as a level playing field. Ever.

  • Not sure if my version of Xelda would count, I've been working on the engine and how to execute puzzles, but I am far away from the actual "end game" (horrible pun intended). My sprites are ripped though (rule 7). On rule 3, I wrote something as a teen, but I'm not a pro (I'm pretty sure I'm in infoseek).
  • We are only using the Infoseek rule as a guide - WoS admins can use discretion there :)

  • Last night, we were offered a generous donation towards prizes. I haven't said yes or no yet, but if anyone else wishes to donate, please PM me and I'll work out costs for smaller prizes and see if it's viable :) I do have something in mind for smaller prizes.

If you do win a smaller prize I would either ensure Lee doesn't come round to give it personally or lock your wife in the cellar...

I would suggest any existing libraries, sprite engines, etc., are all covered under 9) Any tools can be used. There's clearly a difference between utility libraries and an actual game which might be implemented using them.

But since I won't be able to participate my opinion counts as nothing compared to someone who might put some hours in.

  • Can we expect more limitations, like a theme or something..?

Nope. As long as it's clean and not designed to attack people lol

I'd like to volunteer my services to anyone that's interested (or desperate!) I can't program in Basic worth a damn but I'm quite a good artist, more of a technical one good with isometric drawing and a story writer. I'm also pretty patient and can follow instructions.

as long as the weapon to kill them is clean (the blood has been wiped off first before each killing) and that the aliens don't use organs harvested from people or that the aliens ain't people in disguise.
Best write a Pink Fluffy Unicorn shoot'em up, collect the magical rainbow juice that they squirt over the clouds as they die (no Mat, you can't say die, think of something else...) so that the sunshine brigade are happy happy happy in Tra-La La-La Land. Wizball springs to mind.

  • Challenge accepted!
  • Can I ask:

We are a small team as mates from the 80's who made some games. We've all moved on and only one of us is still a games programmer. I haven't made a game since the late 80's and carved a new career in the server admin area.

Can we enter? One true coder, one that hasn't coded games since the 80s and two mates?

Let us know, as we're raring (gedit?) to go!

Fantastic! I'll just edit the Wizball file to put my name over Paul Owen's name and I'm there!

Also seeing as appears I'm an adjudicator then I'm pretty sure I'll win a major prize...

This is why the admins have to make the infoseek decision. I don't see a problem with that as you are starting on a reasonable skill level to the others :)

  • Wow! I just looked at my messages :)

Many thanks to the people that have offered donations towards prizes. As a result, all team members that submit a completed game will now also receive one of these magnets:-

    s35magnet.jpg

If we keep getting donations at the rate they are coming in, there will also be an S35 pin, and other goodies :)

    Thanks folks!

No tools (your own tools are ok as long as they were never published and therefore not in infoseek)

What about non-professional tools of mine that have been published? (No idea if they're in infoseek though, I don't control that).

Infoseek hasn't been updated for the last 5 years, so it's likely your stuff is not on there.

Even my later games are not on there (yet).

  • This is an occasion where I should sit on the sidelines but I would be happy to offer advice to anyone who asks. In addition, the AGD forums and FB page are very handy resources for those looking to develop a game with the tool.
