Katabatia - New version 1.1

Post by malcontent »

I am very happy to announce Katabatia, a rogue-like, is finished. This was a project quite long in the making, but fortunately did not succumb to the preview curse.

For an idea to how long this took: I started it for the very first 16k cart compo. Obviously the game was a bit more complicated. Source code is included.

Looks cool but when I use the link to download it is asking for a "File Password" in order to get the download link so I can't try it.

Whoops. Password is "rogue". Phone posting from work RN and I can't seem to change it to passwordless ATM. But it will let me change the password. I must have to reupload.

Ah, you finished it - very nice! Just going through chargen at the moment. Love the use of PETSCII for the title/background screens.

Thanks guys.

Moloch: I'm not much of a graphician so PETSCII was the best I could manage. It's at least in keeping with the text mode graphics of Rogue.

Last Chance: I agree!

Had time to play only a little, but got to say, very solid and atmospheric! Music is noisy in a good way (when played on 6581 with strong filtering)

And big thumbs up for releasing the source too!

Great game here. I like that I can play it all with Joystick.

Most excellent! Just getting to the end of Demons of Dex, so it's almost time for another!

Wow, a real rogue for the C64. I really adore rogue-likes, so I adore games like Trogue64, and many others, but I have yet to play the actual Rogue, or the closest thing to it, on a C64.

This is very likely going to become my most loved rogue (-like) game of them all, because as much as I adore Trogue64, I wasn't a fan of getting rushed through the place by the flood of water. I like to take my time and sniff the flowers, so that was a mechanic I probably appreciate less than other players.

The mastertronic rogue was quite flawed, though the Hakuto Force release was nice enough.

But this -- this is huge for me! :commodore: :beerbanger:

PS: Playing and loving the hell out of this! :)
I'm not sure if any updates are planned, but I wouldn't mind some keyboard controls. Even if it's something as simple as WASD and spacebar in place of the joystick.

Joystick only control was a prime consideration from the get go because the cart compo, for which the game was started, gave bonus points for supporting the GS, basically a keyboardless 64. The only "keyboard" function, the shift key to display messages, is joy port 1 fire button.

The joystick only choice is why the movement omits the diagonal of a traditional roguelike.

Ah, I see! Thanks for explaining.

A version that doesn't have to apply to these rules is not in the books, much later, maybe? I hope this kind of question doesn't come across as if this was expected in any way. I adore this game as it is and I've played it throughout the night, which is why I now have to catch up on some extra sleep XD.
