Dizzy's Cartoon Adventure on Treasure Island!

Dizzy was looking forward to his round-the-world cruise. When he told the other Yolkfolk about the good deal he found, they wondered just what lay ahead of him...

Dizzy enjoyed the cruise at first. The captain, Long John Silver, was a lovely old bloke with a kindly manner, good at insulting and degrading the fare paying punters. He was well-balanced -- he had a parrot on one shoulder and a chip on the other.

Dizzy thought he would organize a game of cricket on the aft deck. In a fit of blinding stupidity, he used LJ's spare leg collection as makeshift stumps, and when they ere lost overboard he was made to walk the plank!

That was how he came to find himself gently poaching on the silent, sun-kissed beach of a seemingly deserted island...

He had to somehow find a way back to the Yolkfolk and lodge his compensation claim with the travel agent...

About

The famous Oliver Twins' Dizzy saga has arrived on the Atari Jaguar!

Dizzy and The Yolkfolk are characters created by the Oliver Twins, and these characters would appear in many games during the 8 and 16-bit eras. Most of their appearances were in multi-screen platform adventure puzzle games, however, they also appeared in some great arcade games as the title characters.

Slowly, over the course of the series, we learn more about this odd little family and help them out of the tricky situations they find themselves in by visiting the many varied locations of their magical world.

This is the first in a series of Dizzy titles to be released on the Atari Jaguar. The games were a huge hit in Europe in the late 80s and early 90s, with many of the Dizzy titles climbing to the top of video game charts. If you're outside of Europe, you may not be familiar with the Dizzy series, and we're happy to introduce Dizzy and the Yolkfolk to gamers who may never have experienced them before. We hope you enjoy them!

With thanks to the Oliver Twins and Codemasters. The Oliver Twins and Codemasters generously donate all their royalties to Special Effect and The National Videogame Arcade.

Gameplay

Explore the Treasure Island with Dizzy, where you must solve several puzzles in order to escape and return to the Yolkfolk. During your travels you'll encounter the Mysterious Island's deserted Tree House Village, Fabulous Gold Mines, Huge Caves, Magic Shops, and Secret Treasure! You can even go under water but remember your snorkel!

There are two ways to complete the game:

  • Solution #1 (Tricky): Find a way off the island and back to the Yolkfolk.
  • Solution #2 (Very Tricky): There are THIRTY pieces of gold hidden on the island; find these before making good your escape... Some of them are VERY well hidden!

GOOD LUCK!

Save State of Play

Unlike the other games in the Dizzy series, Treasure Island Dizzy only features a single life, a game play feature that the Oliver Twins were not happy about at the time it was released. Now, for the first time, you can time jump back to before a fatal mistake was made and try a different approach to a given problem.

To activate this feature, press # + 1 on the Jaguar keypad to save your current state. You can then press # + 3 to load your saved state. Note that the saved game state will not survive the power being turned off to your Jaguar.

Treasure Island Dizzy is a fun, bright, colorful and competent puzzle platformer with great music that you will enjoy for about the first hour and then will start to drive you criminally insane. Kidding aside, I loved this game. You guide an egg character who can pick up items, place items and jump. Certain enemies can be taken out by jumping into them. You are stranded on an island and your objective is to use the items to progress and escape, as well as find 30 coins to fully complete the game at the end. The puzzles are good, hard but not too hard, and the coins are well hidden. Your first play through will take 3-4 hours, but you could eventually speed run this in 45 minutes or so. The game has some tricky parts, but once you figure them out you will be deeply satisfied. I'd recommend this to anyone with a Jaguar and anyone who is a fan of the puzzle platformer genre. I can't wait till the next Dizzy game is released, it will be a day one purchase for me!
