PRECINCT 20: Dead Strange

Post by Alf Yngve »

The secret project I and Richard Bayliss have been working on has now come so far that I'm prepared to tell you something more substantial.

- The title is "PRECINCT 20: Dead Strange", based on a series of short stories under the same title (Google them).

- You play a police detective hunting for clues in a series of murders with possibly supernatural causes.

- You encounter vicious street gangs, wild packs of dogs, sewer rats, and some mysterious beings that like to lurk in the shadows.

- You can go from one location to another by selecting different pathways in the game.

- The goal is to collect all the clues (and survive) to get a password to the ending. Depending on how many clues you collect, you will either unlock the good ending -- or the bad one!
- The ending is a separate load -- and a mini-game in itself (actually TWO games, the Good Ending and the Bad Ending, depending on which password you unlocked in Part 1. )

Excellent depressive / horror / noir mood in the backgrounds, and a great concept which certainly hasn't been overrepresented on the C64! And it isn't a platformer :P

Are you using sprite / background priority so that player & enemies will walk behind those foreground objects?

That's right, the game uses foreground effects (signs, lampposts, crates, trees, etc.).

Also, the foreground is used as a "raster" to make the player character walk into shadows:

More screens from PRECINCT 20: DEAD STRANGE.
(You will just have to imagine the creepy sound FX and Richard Bayliss's haunting, moody music...)

A quick update...

The game is still being worked on. I have made lots of improvements to graphics, level design etc.

Richard Bayliss's music for the game is appropriately spooky and inspired by John Carpenter (as I requested).

Also, the short stories that the game is loosely based on have now been released as a real book! (Google the title and find out...)
