Mini review by Matt Phillips*

creator of Tanglewood and director of BIG EVIL CORP

Art

Backgrounds are great, enemies are varied and well drawn, main characters are cute, story pages look amazing. Everything stands out, good use of palette cycling. Everything on screen is small but I got used to it quickly.

Music and SFX

Lovely tunes, fits the theme of the game, very varied, some are still stuck in my head. Has a sound test option where the enemies play in an adorable little band.

Cartridge

Mega Cat pretty much have this nailed by now, all parts are good quality, correct voltages/coatings/tapered edges/etc, cart has JPN notch, lovely artwork and manual.

Pacing

You are introduced to mechanics and enemies, and even their various attacks gradually and with context. The game starts mixes up mechanics in interesting ways once you've learned them. It was exciting finding something new.

Story

I didn't pick up on all of it, but I'll have another run through at some point to fill in the gaps. Story is shown via comic book panels between chapters, some of them are even animated, they're really nice.

Game design

Run-and-jump platformer with secret areas, varied enemies, and boss sections. I especially loved the mini bosses that trap you until you kill them, and all uses of the balloons. Would have liked something to collect, though. Levels can be a bit empty at times.

Hit boxes

You can learn the quirks and work around it, but there are still some unfair deaths when you absolutely definitely hit some enemies in the right places.

Screens

Hidden surprises on the next screen. The game is presented a screen at a time, but occasionally there will be a pending ledge, enemy, or projectile immediately at the start of the next. You usually need to carefully enter the next screen slowly.

Jumping enemies

If you are above an enemy and it jumps underneath you, it kills you. This was probably the most frustrating part of the game, because eventually bosses start jumping, too.

Should you buy Devwill Too?

Yes! Looking forward to Manganga's next game!
