Pitfall 2: The Lost Caverns [alpha]

This is a first draft alpha. It still needs a lot of polish, but it is a fully working and completable port of the C64 release.

Unfortunately, this first release won't run smoothly on an A500 - but it should be OK on an A1200 (future updates should be a lot more optimal).

Graphics are mostly from the Sega arcade version, though we're temporarily using the Quickclaw and Rhonda sprites from the NES 30th anniversary Super Pitfall hack as neither character appeared in the arcade machine. Music from https://modarchive.org/index.php?req...d&query=100615

I'll put it aside for a while and come back to it in future. Asides from optimization and polish, it'd be cool to add levels exclusive to the arcade machine and other editions later on.

I loved the arcade version. Starts like the first Pitfall then goes in the caverns. Deep!

Nice work.

Very beautifull! I just tried it on Amiga600 with crt monitor, it's sensational. It feels like playing arcade. Of course being an alpha version I'm not going to needlessly list what's missing, or bugs. If this is the beginning of development there is hope for a great conversion! Go on like this !!!

I really liked this game as a kid.
My friend had a nice C64 with floppy and Speeddos+ and when our game choice wasn't Wintergames, Ghostbusters or Quest for Tires it often was Pitfall II.
It was a little ahead of it's time and I always liked the soundtrack and athmosphere.
Just played the alpha quite far... The engine and the game are great work, congrats!

I played this on C64 too, never really got anywhere but it was probably one of the first platform games I tried.

Many thanks for this @Earok, first original game bought on C64 at time

i still love it, soft music, relaxing gameplay, checkpoints (!), a rarity for the time.
I have completed your alpha, yes there are bugs that need to be fixed, but the game is almost ok

VERY long shot : any chance to unlock the original c64/Atari gfx setting completing this?

You guys should really post the bugs you found here for earok

Maybe he's not aware of them; and this would help identify in order to fix

It might be worth noting that the Atari 8-bit version had a second level. While one could manage the first level with some exercise, the 2nd level was really really tough and close to impossible to manage. It would be nice to include the second level as well.

When I go down all the stairs in level 1, I can do nothing but hit that bird or what it was.
I can not get past this and what is the key for?

You are mentioning this, right?

I would take advantage of it by using the advanced arcade level tiles that would else not appear in your version [like the incas themed level]

Once at the bottom, walk as far as you can, wait, and grab the balloon. The key is a cross in the original game. This is the restore position should you die.

Restore, I get it, thanks.
I do not get to the button I think. I must look at it again.
